It is a rock rather than a single mineral — mostly lazurite, which supplies the blue, mixed with pyrite, which shows as gold flecks, and calcite, which shows as white veining. The best material has come out of the Sar-e-Sang mines in Badakhshan, in north-eastern Afghanistan, for something over six thousand years, which makes it one of the oldest continuously worked gem deposits on earth.

The honest version. Lapis has been called the stone of wisdom and truth since antiquity, it sits on Tutankhamun's burial mask, and in crystal tradition it is associated with clarity and self-expression. That history is genuinely remarkable and we are not dismissive of it.

What we will not tell you is that a bracelet sharpens your intellect, opens your throat chakra, heals anything or changes your circumstances. It does not, and no seller who claims otherwise can stand behind it. What this is: four named stones, one of them a rock that people have valued for six millennia, with your own word on the clasp.

Look for imperfection. Real lapis carries gold pyrite flecks set into the stone and white or grey calcite veining, and the blue varies from bead to bead. The fakes are the ones that look perfect: one flawless even blue, no white, no gold, every bead identical.

The decisive test is acetone. Put nail polish remover on a cotton bud and rub a bead — on dyed jasper or howlite the blue lifts straight onto the cotton. On real lapis the cotton stays clean.

The opposite — it is the evidence. The white is calcite and the gold is pyrite, and both are part of the rock. A lapis bead with no calcite and no pyrite is either exceptional material at a price this is not, or it is dyed. We would rather send you the honest rock.

Because good material is geologically rare and comes from a handful of remote deposits, and because the deep even blue that everyone wants is the small minority of what is mined. Historically it was worse: ground into ultramarine, lapis was the most expensive pigment in Europe, priced above gold by weight, which is why Renaissance painters saved it for the Virgin's robes.

At bead grade it is affordable, which is what this bracelet is. Anything advertised as flawless deep-blue lapis for very little money is not lapis.

Black onyx, a glossy black chalcedony; banded black agate, which is the same family with visible layering through it; and a single mahogany obsidian bead as the centrepiece — obsidian is volcanic glass, and the mahogany variety gets its red-brown streaking from iron inclusions. Four different materials rather than four shades of one.

Anyone who likes deep blue. There is no restriction by gender or age. In Vedic astrology lapis is sometimes linked to Shani and recommended on that basis, and some astrologers advise against it for particular charts — practitioners disagree, so ask the one you trust rather than a product page. Physically it is inert and safe against skin.

Daily, yes. In water, no — and lapis needs more care than most stones. It is soft, around 5 to 5.5 on the Mohs scale, so it scratches more easily than quartz, and it is porous enough that soap, perfume and prolonged soaking will dull the surface over time. Take it off before the shower and the pool, and put it on after fragrance.

Measure your wrist with a strip of paper against a ruler. Small is 15.2 to 16.5 cm and fits most women, Medium is 16.5 to 18.2 cm and fits most men, Large is 18.2 to 20 cm. Between two sizes, take the larger — a bead bracelet should sit on the wrist rather than grip it.
