Beads cut from hematite, which is iron ore — iron oxide, the mineral iron is smelted from. Polished, it turns a dark metallic grey with a genuine mirror reflection, and it is dense enough that you notice it on your wrist in a way you do not with quartz or agate. Here is the honest version. In crystal tradition hematite is described as a grounding stone, and it has been worn as an amulet since antiquity — the Romans associated it with Mars and with iron. That history is real.

What we will not tell you is that it boosts testosterone, improves circulation, relieves pain, balances blood pressure or replaces anything a doctor would give you. It does none of that, and claims like those are not ones any seller can stand behind. If you are dealing with an actual medical problem, see a doctor rather than buying a bracelet — including ours.

What it reliably is: a dense, mirror-polished piece of iron ore you will actually feel on your wrist.

Barely. Hematite is antiferromagnetic — it will not hold a fridge magnet and it will hardly shift a compass needle. This surprises people, because beads sold as "magnetic hematite" are strongly magnetic. Those are a different material: sintered ferrite, a synthetic composite pressed into bead shapes. It is not a scam exactly, it is just not hematite, and it is worth knowing which one you are buying.

Two checks. First, the magnet: genuine hematite is not strongly magnetic, so a bead that snaps onto a magnet is the synthetic. Second, the streak: drag a piece across unglazed porcelain — the back of a tile works — and real hematite leaves a rust-red line. That red streak is where the name comes from, from haima, Greek for blood.

A polished bead should also mirror your reflection in the mineral itself, not in a sprayed coating that chips at the drill hole.

Better not. Hematite is iron oxide, and repeated soaking, soap and sweat will dull the mirror polish and can raise rust spotting around the drill holes. A splash or a rainy walk is fine; the shower and the swimming pool are not. The plating on the clasp has the same enemies.

It is already oxidised — that is what iron oxide means — so it will not rust the way bare steel does. What it can do with prolonged wet is develop dull spotting at the edges and the drill holes, which is why the care advice is to keep it dry. Kept dry, the polish holds.

Both, and it is one of the more genuinely unisex stones because there is no colour to it — just dark metallic grey. S fits most women at 15.2 to 16.5 cm, M fits most men at 16.5 to 18.2 cm, and L covers 18.2 to 20 cm.

Measure your wrist with a strip of paper against a ruler and match it to S, M or L above. If you fall between two, size up. This matters more with hematite than with other stones: it is the heaviest bead of its size, and a tight fit becomes uncomfortable by the afternoon.

Yes, and it stacks well because it is plain. One thing to watch: hematite is harder than most plated metals, so if you wear it hard against a plated watch case it will eventually mark it. Put it on the other wrist, or leave a gap.

It can. Hematite is hard but brittle, so a sharp knock against a stone floor or a granite counter can take a flake off an edge. It is not fragile in normal wear — but it is the one thing more likely to damage it than anything else, more so than daily use.
